MARKING & CUTTING PAVERS


When installing pavers, it is more than likely that some form of cutting will be necessary. No one area will be absolutely perfect and will allow the pavers to be laid with no extra cuts needed. Especially when creating patterns, soldier courses and angles, pavers will need to be cut to accommodate for this. The edges of the pavement will have to be cut to size to fit the area to result in a clean beautiful look.

Making edge cuts requires accuracy and precision cutting to achieve the best results. This method is used at the edge of the paved area, and also when creating curbs and borders. Here are some steps you can follow to ensure your pavement is properly edged and look fantastic.

Step 1 Mark the Pavers

Start by laying your soldier course, then follow with laying the body pavers. Since the pavers need to be cut, setting the edge restraint first will help create a smooth curve. Since all the body pavers on a curve need to be cut, lay as many full body pavers up to the edge restraint. Then place a paver in position and mark where the cuts have to be made. As shown in this diagram, a paver is being used measure for the soldier course that will be installed.

Step 2 Cut the Pavers

Finally, cut the pavers along the line marked. The cut must be straight and accurate. There are specialized tools available that will make this process much easier and give you a professional cut every time. There are specialized tools available for making edge cuts. The three most common tools used are hammer and chisel, power saws and block splitters.

Hammer and Chisel - Using a hammer and chisel was traditionally the most common method to make edge cuts for pavers. This requires an infallible eye for detail and should only be done by experts.

Power Saws - There is a wide variety of power saws that are used for cutting pavers. This method has become a more common method for making edge cuts since its introduction to the industry 30 years ago. It is controlled and accurate and will achieve a clean cut every time.

Paver Splitters - Paver Splitters are the easiest and most effective method to use for making edge cuts. They are fairly simple and safe to use and have no lethal moving parts. They have use a jaw-like blade system that splits the paver in the desired position.
