Cobblestone Street Pavers


Summary On Cobblestone

Cobblestones were the original stones that were used as a paving material during the 15th century in many European countries. They were utilized  for the purpose of paving straight over dirt roads to provide a cleaner and safer environment for horses, horse carriages, carts and mankind. The typical process of building streets and roads from cobblestones is; cobblestones were collected along from river banks and river beds then they were set in sand and bound together with mortar to create paved streets and roads.  The appearance of cobblestone are very similar to pebble stones, which they still have the same characteristics of being round with a smooth edge, but cobblestones are a larger version. The word cobblestone derives from an old English word which means “large lump” which bests describes their round and lumpy appearance.


Cobblestone Great Strength and Durability Values

The biggest benefit to using cobblestone as pavers to cover dirt streets and roads during the 15th century, is because cobblestone were the strongest natural material that was easily attained and available to man as cobblestones were also well known as being exceptionally durable. Another benefit was, they were easy to remove from riverbanks rather than chiseling or carving single pieces from larger blocks of natural stone.  Thirdly, they were for free and anyone could collect them for their own purposes.

Original Cobblestone Streets and Roads Still Exist Today

Cobblestones have such tremendous strength values that there are still cobblestone streets and roads that were built centuries ago in European countries and still exist today. One fine example is in France, where sections of cobblestone streets still remain and are special highlights for cycling competitors in the Tour De France cycling race.

There are still many cobblestone streets and roads that exist throughout the world and are untouched because of their historic values and historic characteristics. Older cities in The  United States Of America including; Boston, New York, Chicago and Pittsburgh still have older streets and roads that were originally paved with cobblestone in the early 20th century, when horses and carts roamed the streets. Some of the older cobblestone roads and streets have been replaced by asphalt. The interesting fact is in some instances where the roads have been directly covered with asphalt and the asphalt eventually cracks the original cobblestone pavers can be seen underneath.

Historic Landmarks

Original cobblestone streets and roads have so much history about them and that’s what makes them such a special and unique historic landmark. Some original cobblestone streets and cobblestone buildings throughout the world are actually protected by law as they can never be replaced or removed because of the importance they provide in terms of historic landmarks.

Today’s Cobblestone Street

During the early 19th century, the original cobblestone paving material was slowly being replaced by quarried stone such as granite, sandstone and flagstone. For street and road paving applications, natural stones were cut in rectangular shapes, square shapes and in various sizes. For that period of time, the biggest advantage to building streets and roads from natural stone in regular shapes and sizes is the pattern of the paving is set with an even and flat surface for streets and roads. This regular paving pattern created a much smoother ride for carts, horses and carriages. Another advantage of using natural stone pavers for streets and roads in that time is they were less noisy, then cobblestone streets and roads. In the late 20th century, with better quarrying tools , faster quarrying processes and improved equipment, natural stone pavers are fast becoming the more popular paving material for a wide variety of residential and public roads, streets and crossings.

Дорожки из брусчатки служат веками, ведь не даром в средние века все основные улицы мостили каменной брусчаткой. В наши времена одним из примеров является Красная площадь.

Практические рекомендации по укладке брусчатки

В последние годы на тротуары и проезжие части российских городов стали возвращаться брусчатка, цветная и фигурная тротуарная плитка и другие архитектурно выразительные и практичные мелкоштучные элементы мощения. Однако культура работы с такими материалами не всегда соответствует их функциональным и эстетическим возможностям. Нарушения технологии укладки мелкоштучных элементов мощения, применение материалов, не соответствующих назначению покрытия часто приводит к тому, что дороги и тротуары проваливаются, горбятся, отдельные элементы расшатываются и разрушаются. Поэтому при укладке мелкоштучных элементов мощения важно соблюдать технологию, корректно использовать материалы и применять специальное оборудование для выполнения работ по укладке брусчатки.

Подготовка основания для укладки брусчатки.

Начинать работу, при подготовке основания для укладке брусчатки следует с уплотнения земляного полотна до устойчивого состояния. При этом особое внимание следует уделять организации его дренирования. В случае, если грунтовое основание влажное с низкой несушей способностью необходимо использовать геосинтетические материалы. Однако если грунт песчаный, часто вообще не требуется укладка несущего слоя.

Подготовка постели под мощеное покрытие (укладку брусчатки).

Поперечный уклон постели должен соответствовать поперечному уклону наружного покрытия. Толщина подстилающего слоя составляет 2-5 см. Нельзя превышать верхнюю границу, иначе под деиствием эксплуатационной нагрузки может деформироваться наружное покрытие (брусчатка). В качестве материала подстилающего слоя наиболее подходит песок фракций 0-2 или 0-4 мм. мелкий щебень крупностью 1-3 или 2-5 мм, а также смесь дробленого песка со щебнем крупностью 0-5 мм. Размер крупных частиц не должен превышать 8 мм.

На участках с повышенными транспортными нагрузками в качестве связующего для подстилающего слоя рекомендуется добавлять цемент или известь. На участках под крышами или навесами материал подстилающего слоя обычно остается сухим и рыхлым. В этом случае укладки брусчатки в сухой раствор и соответствующую щебеночную смесь, а после укладки все промежутки между камнями заполняют мелкозернистым песком.

Правильная укладка брусчатки.

Камни брусчатки следует укладывать точно по высоте, углу наклона и с учетом направления трассы (по шнуру), оставляя достаточные зазоры для швов. При принудительном уплотнении (трамбовке) даже самые небольшие погрешности укладки брусчатки не смогут быть устранены. Это относится также к камням с прокладками. Впрочем прокладки нельзя считать полноценной заменой заполнения швов при укладке брусчатки. Они могут служить лишь вспомогательным средством для обеспечения определенной ширины швов. Расположение и размеры швов вдоль кромок бордюрных камней и прочих ограждающих элементов и сооружений необходимо планировать в соответствии с модульной сеткой. При этом надо принимать в расчет отклонения размеров ± 3 мм, обусловленные технологией изготовления элементов мощения. Это позволит при необходимости заменять камни или плитки в покрытии.

Для обеспечения прямолинейности швов примерно через каждые 3 м в продольном направлении натягивают шнуры. При разметке больших участков необходимо натягивать шнуры в двух направлениях и через каждые 1-3 м контролировать соблюдение прямых углов.

В качестве обрамления мощеных участков следует использовать закладываемые в бетонную постель бордюрные или окантовочньге камни, которые, как правило, достаточно надежно воспринимают нагрузку на края покрытия. Эти ограждения устанавливают перед укладкой наружной части мостовой, чтобы предотвратить поперечные смешения и осадку камней.

Примыкающие к строениям мощеные участки укладывают так, чтобы поверхностные воды стекали не к зданию, а от него. В противном случае необходимо предусмотреть сточные желоба и дождеприемные решетки у самой постройки.

В соответствии с требованиями стандарта DIN 18318 неровности наружной поверхности в пределах 4-х метрового контрольного отрезка мостовой из бетонных камней и бетонных плит не должны превышать 10 мм. Однако этот критерий всегда следует рассматривать в сочетании со структурой наружной части покрытия. Разницу в высоте брусчатки обычно компенсируют их укладкой в относительно рыхлую песчаную постель.

Выбор оборудования для укладки мелкоштучных элементов мощения.

Для получения качественных и долговечных покрытий из мелкоштучных элементов мощения (брусчатки) целесообразно применять современную технику. Виброплиты с рабочей массой 130 кг и центробежной силой 18-20 кН удовлетворяют требованиям уплотнения мощеных покрытий толщиной до 6 см. Для уплотнения мощеных покрытий толщиной 8-10 см применяют виброустройства массой 170-200 кг с центробежной силой не менее 20-30 кН. Для укладки более толстых мощеных покрытий необходимо использовать виброустройства массой 200-600 кг с центробежной силой примерно от 30 до 60 кН.

Диапазон применения виброплит включает работы от уплотнения грунтов в траншеях и на открытых участках, в том числе связных грунтов, до уплотнения тяжелых булыжников мощеных мостовых.

Легкость эксплуатации виброплит обеспечивается применением стандартных добавочных плит, включаемых в комплект поставки, плавной регулировкой движения машины вперед и назад, осуществляемого гидравлической системой, а также электрозапуском и дополнительным режимом скорости.

Виброплита компактна, у нее низко расположенный центр тяжести и минимальная рабочая высота. Система регулировки позволяет адаптировать машину к различным видам грунтов. Режим дополнительной скорости позволяет увеличивать скорость передвижения виброплиты по рабочей площадке до 28 м/мин.

Резиновая юбка специального профиля, размещенная между верхней массивной частью машины и опорной плитой исключает попадание грязи в машину. Вибрация значительно гасится наклонными амортизаторами.

How to lay our leeca pavers

EXCAVATION / SUBGRADE
The area to be excavated should be 12 inches wider than the outer limits of the granite pavers. This will provide a firm base to support the edge of the pavers and edge restraint.

Make sure the depth to be excavated is measured from finished pavement surface elevations and appropriately marked on grade stakes.
The bottom of excavations, below finished pavement elevation, should equal the total thickness of the designed base, sand bed (after paver installation and compaction) and the 1-1/4  inch  Leecastone pavers being used.
When all excavation is completed, compact the subgrade with a vibratory plate compactor. Make sure that compaction is thorough, uniform and complete.
The use of a geo-textile material will add stability to your installation.


BASE
The base should be spread in layers of uniform thickness then compacted. While compaction is a key to performance, it is essential if the pavers are to be used on a driveway application. The 3-6 inch base for patios, walkways and pool decks may be placed in two to three layers and compacted with a vibratory plate compactor with 5,000 foot pounds of force or greater. The 6-8 inch base for driveways may be placed in two batches of 3 inches only if a vibratory roller is used. Be sure to thoroughly compact along edges, in corners and around structures.

EDGE RESTRAINT
Edge restraints must be installed on the part of the pavement edge that is not restrained by an existing structure. ie. A building, concrete curbing or slab.

SAND SETTING BED
Loosely screed the concrete sand to a uniform thickness of 3/4 of an inch over your compacted base. The sand should never be thicker than 1 inch thick. Do not compact the sand bed before laying Earthstone Pavers.

CUTTING PAVERS
Leecastone pavers may be cut using a guillotine splitter, masonry saw or hand held angle grinder with a diamond cutting surface.

COMPACTION AND JOINT SANDING
After installing Leecastone pavers in the desired pattern, pull a string line that is parallel to the building or edging. This will give you a baseline to follow throughout the entire job. With an assistant, pull the string line at every other joint to check for alignment. Some straightening of the pavers will be necessary due to the old world manufacturing process. Use a plate compactor with a force of 5000 ft lbs. Or more. Start on the edge of the pavement and compact the perimeter, then compact in overlapping rows on the rest of the pavement. Compact all pavers again going in the opposite direction. Do not compact within three feet of any area that is not restrained. If any of the pavers need to be straightened, use the string line method. Using a backpack blower, blow off any sand that may have gotten onto the surface. You will need to leave at least one inch of depth between the top and bottom edge of the pavers. This will allow for full penetration of the polymeric sand in the joints. Polymeric sand must be used for proper installation of these pavers. Install according to manufacturers guidelines.

SEALERS AND ENHANCERS

A GUIDE TO INSTALLING PAVING STONES


If you have the time, the energy, lots of patience and the determination, why not install the paving stones to the designated area you have chosen. It is a very cost affective process. But remember that the key to a successful installation process is to be well organized in preparation. Have a checklist for the duration of installation from start to finish.

 
Materials and Equipment Needed
Base material
Sand
Gloves
Paving Stones
Wheel Burrow
Spade and broom
Rubber hammer
Tape Measure and a level
Markers
Shovel
Hire a Compactor


Step One: Preparing and Excavation
Adequate preparation is always required. Make sure you have investigated what lies beneath the area first and foremost as some TV and electricity cables may be buried close to the surface. Mark out the area to be excavated. You can use a thin string to guide you or a marker that can mark the grass.
First, you have to excavate the area. You may want to consider hiring a bobcat to do the job. It will be a timeless effort by doing so. You will need to dig at least 4 to 8 inches deep remembering to allow for base material, sand and paving stones.

Step Two: Base Preparation
You will need at least 3 to 4 inches in thickness of base material. The preferred base material for paving stones is crushed stone. Apply the crushed stone at least 3 inches in thickness. Spread it out evenly using a rake or broom then you compact the crushed stone.

Step Three: Applying Sand
Once you have compacted the crushed stone you can apply an inch of sharp edged sand. You will need to compact the sand as well as this will level out the area.

Step Four: Applying Paving Stones
You may commence to set the paving stones on the sand bed in the pattern required. If you have chosen a pattern that features a central focal point, start laying pavers in the center of the area. If the pattern you have chosen is plain and basic you may start at one end of the area and continue to the other side.


Step Five: Fill the Joints
The joints have to be filled with silica sand. Spread the sand evenly all over joints with a broom in a sweeping motion. The sand is what actually interlocks the paving stones for stability. Pavers are made with spacers that allow the sand to go in between the pavers. You must restrain the pavers around the edges of the perimeter to keep in place.
Step Six: Final Compaction

The final stage is to compact the pavers again. A vibrating plate compacter may be used. This process is the last stage ensuring the sand is forced more in between the joints of the pavers.

Step Eight: Hosing Down the Pavers
To clean up, hose down the paving stones with a hand held hose with maximum water flow. You may find a small amount of sand will wash away each time the pavers are hosed down. The amount is insignificant and will not require re sanding. Over time dust and dirt will settle into the joints and will become naturally sealed

Step Nine: Sealing Paving Stones
Allow two to three days for the paving stones to dry. A sealer can then be applied into the pavers. For advice on which type of sealer to use, seek your local specialist for expert advice.

Nine Steps to Installing Your own Garden Pathway


The following article is a quick guide to installing a garden pathway, with the use of the pavers of your choice. A pathway is a functional addition to your landscape for it guides people from one point to another. They provide safe direction through your yard, while keeping everyone’s feet clean from dirt or mud. Pathways are so much more, they are inviting, appealing and connect areas of your landscape together.



Simply follow these easy steps, and create your own unique Garden Pathway.

Nine Steps to Installing Your own Garden Pathway

Step One: Start off by planning and laying out the desired shape and length of your garden pathway. Keep in mind that people like to walk in straight lines. However, having curves and corner is a lot more interesting than straight pathways.

Step Two: It is recommended that your pathways be at least 1.2 meters or 4 feet wide. This will enable two people to walk down the pathway next to each other.

Step Three :Now you will need to decide on the type of pavers you want to use for your pathway installation. Remember that they need to be strong and durable, so they last a lifetime. You can choose from brick pavers, concrete pavers, precast concrete pavers and natural stone pavers. Basically, the pavers should blend with the rest of your landscape and architectural features.


Step four: If you have weak or moist soils, then be sure to consider proper drainage.  Make sure that your pathway slopes away from the house, at about 1/8 of an inch for every foot of pathway.

Step Five: After your plan has been drawn, it is time to dig your trench to the necessary depth. The trench needs to cater for the pavers, the base material and the sand bedding. This is has to be approximately 8 inches deep.


Step Six: Once you have a level trench, place in a 4-inch layer of gravel base material, then compact the area. Now place a 1-inch layer of sand for the bedding, and compact as before. If you think you will grow weeds, place geotextile fabric over the gravel base material and then your sand bedding.

Step Seven: Be sure to install edging around your pathway, so as to keep the pavers together.

Step Eight: Now lay the pavers side by side, making sure that they are always level with each other, and knock them into the sand bedding. Continue to lay them in the desired pattern.

Step Nine: Once all the pavers have been laid, sweep sand over your pathway to fill in the joints. Repeat this until the joints are filled, then compact the pathway. You can now enjoy your new Garden Pathway!

The new high end front yards can be so small their driveway is crammed into a tiny space. How the adjacent planters and strips are landscaped can either make allowances for these spatial conflicts or make them worse. The challenges are many, and like commercial parking lots, there's the potential of repeated damage to expensive plants if the design doesn't allow for the unique needs of vehicular traffic. These allowances can be scaled down to apply to walkways too, because wheelbarrows, bicycles and pedestrians can cause similar problems.


Allow For Pedestrian Access
Everyone has stepped out of a car parked too close to an edge to find they're standing in the landscape planter. For high heels, this is a serious safety concern. It also explains why so many parking lot landscapes are damaged and worn. While tight spaces aren't a problem much of the time, you must design to meet the needs of those dressed for the corporate office or evening parties. To protect shoes, nylons and finely woven fabrics, avoid woody plants along paving edge. Keep them back far enough to avoid snags, pollen, dust or scratching fine leather shoes.


Though carpet roses are an excellent plant for driveway edges, they do bear small thorns. If too close to the paving, getting in and out of a car without snags can be problematic. Keep these plants well back from the edge where the best choice will be low growing heat loving low spreading shrubs. The same can be said for entry walks or sidewalks with large adjacent planters where plants may extend beyond their allotted space to encroach on the walking surface.

Always remember your car has four sides, and clearances should be considered for engine compartment and trunk, bed or hatch without impacting adjacent planting.
If space permits, provide an additional two feet on either side of a driveway parking space to allow passengers to get in and out cleanly.
Change the color of your paving to show visitors exactly where to park their car to prevent them from rolling to a stop too close to the edge or even beyond it.
Allow for Overhang
Parking lot shade trees are battered by vehicle bumpers that overhang edges of paving. Unless curbed or provided with wheel stops, a vehicle can extend up to three feet beyond the front edge of the tire. Anything in this realm, be it a tree trunk or an Indian hawthorn will be damaged unless it remains low growing enough to fit nicely underneath the car.

When a tree is bumped by a car, the impact strips away bark and crushes the conductive tissues underneath. The resulting wound becomes a perfect entry point for parasites, which usually kill or deform the tree. This is why parking lot planters must have curbs, and your nose-in parking areas should be similarly protected by curb stops.

There are other ways cars damage planting. When pulling in side-on to the planter, the wheels may be just inches from the pavement edge. In this position the door will swing out well into the planting to impact trees and shrubs located there.

Set trees back from pavement at least three feet for cars and four feet for trucks to protect it from bumper or door damage.
Avoid tree species with very invasive or surface rooting tendencies that can damage the adjacent driveway because roots seek out moisture that accumulates beneath the paving. To be sure, plant young trees with Deep Root barriers to prevent surface root development.
Allow for Auto Protection
Because your car and that of your guest is valuable, the conditions around your driveway are important to keeping it clean and well protected. Trees located where its canopy will overhang the driveway must be carefully selected to produce minimal litter that could cause damage to autos. All types of fruit should be avoided. Acid from falling ripe fruit damages paint and can etch glass. Birds will flock to such a tree, consume the fruit overhead then defecate. This not only creates unsightly spotting of a car, it can permanently stain paving

Wherever there is irrigation, you chance that wind will cause water spots on your car. In windy sites it is advisable to use drip or bubbler irrigation or stream-spray heads for lawn upwind from parking areas to reduce the chance of drift.

Large shrubs can, over time encroach along extended driveways. If not cut back there is risk to the paint as you or a guest drives by. Carefully select shrubs here to fit the space provided so you are not doomed to perpetual shearing to retain driveway clearances on both sides.

How to build retaining wall system




Step 1:  FOOTING
Dig out trench approx. 200mm deep. The trench should be 60mm wide. Place and
well compact 100mm to 200mm of fine crushed rock (gravel). This base thickness
depends on the wall height e.g. 150mm thick for 1 metre high, 200mm thick for 1.5
metre high and over.

Step 2:  SAND BED
Spread 25mm of sharp sand over the compacted base. This should be in a straight
line checked with a level. If the wall tapers, run a string line at the desired finish level,then gauge down at multiples of 180mm.

Step 3:  FIRST COURSE
The first block course is now bedded into the sand bed. The use of a level and string is recommended to ensure that the first course is layed correctly. Make sure at least 100mm of the first block course is buried below the finish ground level with grave well compacted along the front of the blocks to stabilise.

Step 4:  DRAINAGE & BACKFILL
Where an agpipe or strip drain is used, place behind base of first course. Backfil
behind the blocks using a clean free draining material (e.g. blue metal). Allow
300mm for walls over 1 metre. Now compact backfill material thoroughly to remove
all voids. If backfill is needed behind the drainage area, existing site soils may beused. (Do not use heavy clay).
